Professor Roxy Senior
Consultant Cardiologist, Professor of Clinical Cardiology, National Heart & Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College
Prof Senior specialises in applying echocardiography in various clinical scenarios including valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease and heart failure. These specialist echocardiography techniques include myocardial contrast echocardiography, stress echo and 3-D/speckle tracking.
Prof Senior’s particular interests are in heart failure, coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome.
He has pioneered the clinical development of myocardial contrast echocardiography – a unique way to assess myocardial perfusion by using echocardiography. He also pioneered the use of stress echocardiography for early discharge of patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome. Furthermore, he has utilised hand-held echocardiography for the detection of cardiac dysfunction.
Professor Roxy Senior obtained his masters degree in medicine and cardiology from the University of Calcutta, India. He joined Northwick Park Hospital as a research fellow in 1989 and then was appointed as a consultant cardiologist in 1995 and became director of cardiac research in 2003. He was appointed as a consultant cardiologist and Director of Echo at Royal Brompton Hospital in September 2010.
He regularly teaches registrars from both inside and outside the Trust. Professor Senior has been awarded the Edler Lecture by the University of Lund for his pioneering work in echocardiography.
He is on various task force committees at the American Society of Echocardiography and European Association of Echocardiography.
