Biography

Dr Antonis Pantazis is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, where he treats NHS and private patients.

He was appointed as a consultant cardiologist at the Heart Hospital, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), in 2007. He then went on to work as a consultant cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, in 2015.

He was the leading cardiologist at UCLH’s neuromuscular complex care centre (NMCCC) in the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

In his previous positions, he implemented dedicated clinics for arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ARVC), cardio-neuromuscular and cardiac sarcoidosis. He was also the leading cardiologist for the interventional and surgical programmes for the management of left-ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Clinical expertise

Dr Antonis Pantazis is a leading expert in inherited heart muscle conditions, known as cardiomyopathies. Dr Pantazis has a special interest in all cardiomyopathies, in particular:

  • hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
  • dilated cardiomyopathy.

Dr Pantazis consults with patients who have heart muscle conditions, from diagnosis and medical treatment to invasive management. He has a lot of experience in the management of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, guiding procedures such as alcohol septal ablation and surgical myectomy.

His practice also covers investigating the diagnosis of inherited conditions in family members, through family screening with clinical and genetic tests. At the Trust, Dr Pantazis has been instrumental in the development of the inherited cardiovascular conditions (ICC) service in accordance with his expertise. He introduced the ARVC clinic to the Trust and is leading the programme for the management of LVOTO in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Dr Pantazis has a special interest in echocardiography – investigating complex heart conditions, including heart muscle disease, valvular heart disease and ischaemic heart disease. He is also the head of the echocardiography department at North Middlesex University Hospital.

Research interests

Dr Antonis Pantazis is involved in research, funded by several international grants, in the following fields:

  • phenotype / genotype in left-ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy and ARVC
  • LVOTO
  • cardiac phenotype in Friedreich’s ataxia
  • cardiac phenotype in neuromuscular diseases
  • advanced cardiac imaging in relation to cardiomyopathies, valve diseases and intracardiac device implantation.

Dr Pantazis is the chairman-elect of the European Society of Cardiology working group on myocardial and pericardial diseases.

Publications

Dr Pantazis has had cardiomyopathy-related research published in several peer-reviewed journals. He has contributed to cardiac guidelines on Friedreich’s ataxia for Ataxia UK.

Teaching

Dr Antonis Pantazis is regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings and conferences, to share his knowledge.

Dr Pantazis was previously an honorary clinical senior lecturer at University College London (UCL) where he taught medical students and supervised junior doctors. He was the academic lead for echocardiography at the Institute for Cardiovascular Science, UCL. While working at UCLH, he was also the London Deanery lead for specialist registrar (SpR) echocardiography training.
