Biography

Dr Julian Jarman is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, who treats private and NHS patients.

He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, St Mary’s Hospital Medical School (now part of Imperial College London), and Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. He undertook specialist fellowship training in interventional cardiac electrophysiology and complex pacing at several leading London teaching hospitals.

He has developed novel techniques for the ablation of atrial fibrillation using non-contact mapping, as part of his postgraduate doctorate of medicine (MD) at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.

Dr Jarman is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and has completed both the fellowship and the membership diplomas. He has certification examinations from the European Heart Rhythm Association in invasive cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac pacing and ICDs.

Throughout his career, Dr Jarman has won or been a finalist in a number of awards, including:

  • Innovator of the Year, Imperial College London
  • Young Investigator of the Year, British Cardiovascular Society
  • Young Trainee of the Year, Royal Society of Medicine
  • President’s Medal, Royal Society of Medicine
  • Lucienne Dreyfus Award, European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society.
Clinical expertise

Dr Julian Jarman is a cardiologist who specialises in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disturbances. He performs complex ablation and device implantation procedures at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.

He leads the quality and governance programme for the Arrhythmia Care Group at Royal Brompton Hospital, focusing on driving changes which improve the safety of procedures.

In his outpatient clinic, he sees patients suffering from palpitations and dizzy spells, as well as other possible cardiac symptoms such as breathlessness or chest pains.

As well as investigating and treating patients with hypertension and angina, Dr Jarman sees patients with all types of fast and slow heart rhythm disturbances, and those with heart failure requiring implantable device therapy. He has a particular interest in the management of atrial fibrillation (AF), including interventional treatments.

Dr Jarman performs a wide range of procedures, specialising in:

Research

Dr Julian Jarman’s research interests include:

  • studying the factors determining the outcome of AF ablation
  • assessing the latest interventional technologies, such as contact force sensing catheters to improve the safety of AF ablation
  • totally subcutaneous defibrillators.

Teaching

Dr Julian Jarman is an honorary clinical senior lecturer in clinical cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. He regularly teaches advanced interventional techniques to visiting foreign fellows and consultants.
