Consultant paediatric intensivist

Biography

Dr Margarita Burmester is a consultant paediatric intensivist at Royal Brompton Hospital, where she treats private and NHS patients.

As part of her training, Dr Margarita Burmester studied at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Canada, and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

She has been a consultant at Royal Brompton Hospital since 2002, with a two-year sabbatical as an associate staff member at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Clinical expertise

Dr Margarita Burmester has a strong interest in patient safety. She became interested in simulation training when she was consultant intensivist at Boston Children’s Hospital.

She is a founding member of the CSSC (Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre) – a joint venture between Royal Brompton and Royal Marsden hospitals.

She founded and directs the award winning SPRinT (Simulated interPRofessional Team Training) programme in order to enhance patient safety through team training. The award-winning programme trains over 100 senior multidisciplinary staff from across the Trust each year. It is quality assured through its ongoing collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital’s simulation programme.

She is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators, and an Executive Board Member of the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH).

Research interests

Dr Margarita Burmester has researched innovative learning techniques and how they can translate into clinical effectiveness and improvement.
