Mr Olivier Ghez

Consultant paediatric cardiac surgeon


Mr Olivier Ghez studied at the Université de la Méditerranée Medical School, Marseille (now part of Aix-Marseille Université) and in Paris, France. He then came to the UK to train at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Mr Ghez then completed his research studies at Harvard Medical School, Boston, and in Marseille, where he focused on circulatory assistance and development of the heart.

In 2009, he joined the Royal Brompton Hospital from La Timone Children’s Hospital in Marseille.

Mr Olivier Ghez is a consultant paediatric and congenital cardiac surgeon at Royal Brompton Hospital. He specialises in the surgery of heart malformations in neonatal babies and small infants. He is also the chair of children’s heart services at Royal Brompton Hospital.

He is in a team of four surgeons at Royal Brompton who treat over 500 people with congenital heart disease each year.


In 2017, Mr Olivier Ghez won ITV’s Good Morning Britain Health Star Award. Numerous families nominated him, in the Children’s Health Star category, for the lifesaving surgery he has performed on children diagnosed with congenital cardiac conditions.

Also in 2017, The Sun newspaper honoured Mr Ghez with a Special Recognition Health Star Award. He has operated on thousands of babies and children – giving them a chance at a normal life. Charitable work

Mr Ghez helps charities to provide surgical treatment, free of charge, to children with heart disease who otherwise would not survive. Since 2009, he has been working with the charity Chain of Hope, which was founded by eminent cardiac surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub (who was a consultant at Harefield Hospital from 1969-2001 and at Royal Brompton Hospital from 1986-2001).
