Celebrating 75 years of the NHS
Happy Birthday to the NHS as this year we celebrate its 75th anniversary!
When the NHS was founded by Aneurin Bevan in 1948, the aim was to provide free healthcare services for all at the point of delivery. 75 years later, these principles remain.
Chief executive for Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, Dr Richard Grocott-Mason, commented, “Lots has changed within the NHS over the last 75 years, but the principle of free care for all has remained exactly the same.”

Expert talks now free on RB&HH Education website
Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Education is an online platform providing healthcare professionals worldwide access to a range of educational and training content, including expert talks, events, courses and bespoke clinical training opportunities, delivered by our specialists.
All expert talks on the website are now accessible for free.

London Aorta 2023
The two-day educational event will be held on 28 - 29 September at the Royal College of Physicians and aims to foster and encourage a multidisciplinary approach to aortic illnesses. There will be a variety of sessions led by RBH specialists; click here to see the programme, which includes the imaging course.

Harefield launches new annual transplantation course
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first heart-lung transplant performed in the UK, the first annual core thoracic organ transplantation course was launched at Harefield Hospital and led by Mr Espeed Khoshbin, consultant in cardiac surgery transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
Pioneer of cardiothoracic surgery, Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, joined the course virtually and acknowledged the importance of improving transplant education and research around the world for the good of humanity.

Harefield’s new lung health check service
“Our lung health check service acts as the first step to identifying and diagnosing respiratory conditions, non-respiratory conditions, or the interplay between them. By investigating our patients’ health we can work with them to establish a diagnosis and care plan most appropriate care for their needs”, explains Dr Sundeep Kaul, consultant in intensive care and respiratory medicine.

Ain Shams University clinical visit to Royal Brompton Hospital
Clinicians from Ain Shams University (ASU), Cairo, returned for their second visit to Royal Brompton hospital to continue with the next phase of a five-year aortic programme. The team of surgeons, cardiologists and a perfusionist from ASU continued to observe and learn from our aortic surgery experts, enabling them to provide the very best in specialist aortic services to the citizens of Egypt.
Mr Ulrich Rosendahl, consultant cardiac surgeon, leading the programme commented, “It’s fantastic to see our two institutions continuing to join forces to build upon their specialised cardiac services.”

GSTT launches new robotic surgical training programme
The Thoracic Robotic Surgery virtual observership programme, which run for six weeks starting from 19th June, is the largest robotic surgery training in the UK. It gives participants the opportunity to attend live surgeries, interact with our expert surgical team and have access to an extensive video library of on-demand content. The next dates for the programme are 16th October -24th November 2023 and 15th January - 23rd February 2024.

‘Centre of Excellence' status awarded
Congratulations to Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals’ Heart Rhythm Centre for being awarded ‘Centre of Excellence’ status by The Arrythmia Alliance (AA), a coalition of independent charities, patients, carers, medical groups and professionals.
Our Heart Rhythm Centre is home to one of the largest device implantation services in the country and is a national leader in cardiac resynchronisation therapy. The team was involved in the early development of this important therapy which helps to treat heart failure and improve the heart’s rhythm.

Royal Brompton Private Consulting Rooms
At Royal Brompton Hospital our outpatient wing located at the iconic Old Fire Station building in Chelsea has expanded, providing six new consulting rooms and a suite of new heart and lung diagnostic facilities. Open five-days-a-week, patients can access consultations and multiple tests on the same day, and the consulting rooms are a short walk from the hospital’s diagnostic imaging centre, providing easy access to the very latest imaging technology.

Expert achievements
Dr Chiara Bucciarelli-Ducci, consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield received the 'Excellence in Education Outstanding Mid-Career Educator Award ' by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), an association of the European Society of Cardiology.
When receiving the award, Dr Ducci commented, “I am extremely honoured to receive this recognition. It is a privilege to work with such talented young colleagues and help them reach their full potential.”
