Guy’s, Harefield, Royal Brompton and St Thomas’ Hospital ranked as one of world’s best
Our adult care services across Guy's and St. Thomas' Specialist Care have been recognised among the world's finest by US Newsweek, the American weekly newspaper, based on a global survey of 40,000 medical experts in over 20 countries.
All four institutions under our adult care received acclaim for the 2024 ‘World's Best Specialised Hospitals’. Commendations were particularly notable in cardiology for Royal Brompton, St. Thomas', and Harefield Hospitals. Recognition in cardiac surgery extended to Royal Brompton and Harefield, with Royal Brompton also ranking in the top 5 for pulmonology.
Evelina London receives Global Recognition and Unveilies a New Pediatric Center
Evelina London Children’s Hospital, recognised as one of the world's top pediatric hospitals by US Newsweek, recently unveiled its new day treatment center. The purpose-built facility boasts two dedicated day surgery operating theatres and a family-friendly waiting lounge. The center, designed for up to 2,300 additional children annually, reflects Evelina's commitment to excellence.
We are delighted that the incredible team at Evelina London has been recognised on the 2024 list of ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals’ and we’re proud of the outstanding care they provide to our young patients and their families.
Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub launches biography
Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, one of the world’s most eminent cardiothoracic surgeons who pioneered the world’s first combined heart and lung transplant 40 years ago and established Harefield Hospital’s heart transplant programme, has launched his first offical biography.
His life long achievements were celebrated by colleagues and former patients at a launch event held at the Royal Brompton Hospital where Professor Yacoub commented, "People think of surgeons as heroes but we are not – we are very ordinary people – I am a very ordinary person."
Historic moment for Royal Brompton consultant
Professor Christoph Nienaber has been awarded a seat on the editorial board of The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (JTCVS). This is the first time an interventional cardiologist has been appointed to the board in the journal's history. The JTCVS is widely recognised as the foremost publication in the field of cardiovascular surgery.
“At the Brompton, we have a culture of close interaction between cardiology and cardiac surgery, offereig our patients an ew model of integrated care”, commented Professor Nienaber.
New ‘consultant interview series’ on the education website
Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Education is happy to introduce the new “Consultant Interview Series.” The first two interviews are with Dr Hatem Soliman-Aboumarie, consultant in cardiothoracic intensive care, and Dr Allie Hare, consultant in respiratory and sleep medicine.
Fostering healthcare partnerships in the Middle East
Vanessa Reeve, head of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Consulting, and Ruku Bibi, international business development manager, recently represented our Trust as part of a healthcare trade mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during which they attended the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh meetings with potential partners in the Kingdom. The team showcased the Trust does in the UK and how we could work with organisations in the Kingdom to help strengthen the local health systems and ultimate improve patient outcomes.

Advanced heart failure course
The three-day course will run online from the 26 to the 28 of January 2024. The course covers the core competencies in advanced heart failure and heart transplant medicine, and it is aimed at cardiology trainees, heart failure nurses, pharmacists, Intensivists, and cardiothoracic surgeons with an interest in heart transplantation.
A first global book
The first worldwide textbook on cardiopulmonary point of care ultrasound has been released. It includes contributions from several Royal Brompton and Harefield specialists in the fields of cardiology, radiology, and critical care.
Dr Hatem Soliman-Aboumarie, editor of the book, said: “I truly hope the effort we put into the book with our 57 authors will be beneficial to our colleagues around the world”.
British Sleep Society appoints Royal Brompton president
Congratulations Dr Allie Hare, expert in sleep and ventilation at the Royal Brompton Hospital, who has been appointed President of the British Sleep Society (BSS).
Dr Hare has been a consultant at Royal Brompton since 2014 and treats adult patients with respiratory diseases, and specialises in non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and lung failure. She has developed a simulator-based training programme in NIV for clinicians, for which she was awarded a European Respiratory Society education grant.
A prestigious win for Royal Brompton Hospital
We are delighted Royal Brompton Hospital has won the LaingBuisson Award for 'Innovation in Health Tech'. Our endoscopic valve surgery team at Royal Brompton Hospital, led by Mr Toufan Bahrami, has been recognised for delivering innovation in cardiac surgery, resulting in outstanding patient outcomes.
Mr Bahrami commented, “We're proud to offer our patients significantly improved recovery after mitral, tricuspid and aortic valve repair and replacement surgery, with a much shorter recovery time.”
A presidential award from the European Respiratory Society
Congratulations to Professor Athol Wells, wo has been awarded a ‘presidential award’ from the European Respiratory Society . The prestigious award acknowledges scientific merit, engagement, and exemplary achievements in all respiratory areas, honouring exceptional members for their exemplary achievements and potential for further outstanding developments in all respiratory areas.
Professor Wells has been in post at Royal Brompton since 1999. He was the head of the Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital from 2007 to 2016 and continues to chair the Royal Brompton Hospital ILD research group.
