Biography
Professor Carlo Di Mario is an honorary consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals, where he treats private patients.
He studied medicine and cardiology at the University of Padova in Italy, his home country. He then completed his interventional training and PhD at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. He went on to be the research and clinical director for interventional cardiology at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy.
In 2003, Professor Di Mario took up a specialist post at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. Alongside that role, he was Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College London.
Since 2016, Professor Di Mario has been chair of cardiology at the University of Florence in Italy.
Professor Carlo Di Mario is a specialist in interventional cardiology – the use of catheters and other devices to restore blood flow to the heart without major surgery. These interventions can significantly help patients who are suffering from symptoms such as angina and shortness of breath.
It is a relatively new field and is growing rapidly to include:
- valve repair or replacement (TAVI, MitraClip) for people suffering from valvular heart disease
- interventions on the peripheral vessels
- correction of other structural heart abnormalities.
He is also a recognised authority in the field of intravascular imaging, with ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and near-infrared spectroscopy used for research and clinical guidance.

Professor Di Mario has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals such as:

- The Lancet
- Circulation
- Journal of the American College of Cardiology
- European Journal of Cardiology.
In The Lancet he reported his experience with a new biodegradable stent.
Professor Di Mario is a member of editorial boards for many prestigious journals. He is also the associate editor of:
- Eurointervention
- European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging
- International Journal of Cardiology.
Teaching
Professor Di Mario is a visiting professor of clinical cardiology at Imperial College London.
He is regularly invited to speak at prestigious conferences, such as the World Congress of Cardiology. He has led the development of the first official European training programme for interventional cardiology fellows. He is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology.
