Biography

Dr Kyriakos Kaminaris is a consultant haematologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.

He studied medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ‘Carol Davila’ in Bucharest, from where he graduated in 1999.

Dr Kaminaris then moved to Greece for postgraduate clinical training in medicine and he also undertook 18 months of army duty as a military doctor. He continued his training in medicine in England from 2006, in west midlands and east anglia NHS Foundation Trusts, followed by specialist training in haematology. Dr Kaminaris worked as a clinical fellow at the University College London Hospital (UCLH), Northwick Park Hospital, East Kent University hospitals, and North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke. At UCLH, Dr Kaminaris contributed to the publication of  ‘The clinical features and outcome of 2009 H1N1 influenza infection in allo-SCT patients: a British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation study’.

Clinical expertise

Dr Kyriakos Kaminaris has a  special interest in:

  • anaemias
  • immune/benign cytopenias
  • clotting abnormalities
  • pre or post-operatively haemoglobin optimisation (in Iron deficiency anaemias, in acute blood loss, megaloblastic anaemias- due to vitamin B12/Folate deficiency)
  • immune/mechanical haemolytic anaemias
  • immune thrombocytopenias (ITP)
  • anaemias of chronic conditions or any other cytopenias e.g (neutropenias) as part of the treatment oral/intravenously iron replacement in immune thrombocytopenias (ITP) steroids/IVIG etc.
  • haematological advice/options e.g Erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESA) in anaemia of chronic condition or in patients who do not accept any blood products (e.g Jehova’s witness) as part of pre-op Haemoglobin optimisation.

Teaching

Dr Kyriakos Kaminaris regularly teaches sessions on blood film morphology (with clinical scientists/lab BMS etc) as well as sessions for surgical/medical specialties in various haematological topics.
