Biography

Mr. Silviu Buderi, thoracic surgeon, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the field. He earned his medical degree, MBBCh, summa cum laude from "Vasile Goldis" West University of Arad, Romania. He then joined Queen Mary University, where he completed his MSc in Surgical Skills and Science with a focus on simulation in surgical training in 2009.

From 2012 to 2020, Mr Buderi honed his craft at some of the UK's most prestigious specialist hospitals for heart and lung disease surgery. During this time, he dedicated himself to expanding his medical knowledge and surgical skills, specialising in:

  • single port surgery
  • robotic-assisted surgery (RAS)
  • electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)
  • complex lung resection
  • minimally invasive lung resection
  • oesophageal surgery.

By 2018, he had successfully performed over a thousand procedures, with more than two hundred involving complex lung resections, primarily focused on lung cancer.

In 2019, he joined the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital as a consultant thoracic surgeon. Subsequently, he returned to London and assumed the role of consultant thoracic surgeon at the esteemed Royal Brompton Hospital. Mr Buderi is dedicated to excellence, performing nearly four hundred cases annually with an average of ten cases per week.

Clinical expertise

Mr Buderi specialises in thoracic surgery and is a recognised expert in the surgical management of lung cancer. He offers comprehensive care for various conditions, including:

  • primary or secondary lung cancer
  • primary or secondary mediastinal tumours
  • tracheal cancer and stenosis
  • germ cell tumours
  • pneumothorax and pleural disease
  • diaphragm plication.

He performs a wide range of procedures, such as:

  • adult and paediatric thoracic surgery (benign and malignant)
  • surgery for primary lung cancer, including single or multi-port video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy and anatomical segmentectomy
  • robotic lung resection for primary or secondary lung cancer
  • tracheobronchial airway surgery
  • primary and metastatic chest sarcoma surgery
  • lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema
  • surgery involving the mediastinum
  • standard and complex lung resections for lung cancer, with a special interest in lung-sparing techniques (sleeve resections)
  • diagnostic bronchoscopy.

Research Interests

Mr Silviu Buderi is dedicated to advancing the field of thoracic surgery and improving patient care through his research. His research interests include:

  • surgical treatment for advanced lung cancer
  • pain control post thoracic surgery
  • enhanced recovery following surgery.

Teaching

Mr. Buderi's commitment to education is evident through his role as an educational/clinical supervisor for trainee doctors in adult and paediatric thoracic surgery.

He actively mentors medical students nationally and internationally and serves as part of the panel for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons exam in cardiothoracic surgery.

He is a valued member of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery training faculty, where he supports national and international trainee surgeons and doctors in learning thoracic surgery through live lectures and Wetlabs.

Moreover, he conducts independent courses in cardiothoracic surgery, supported by J&J and Medtronic.
